Data-Driven Graphics Become the Norm in College Basketball Broadcasts

Live, real-time data analysis is moving from the classroom to the TV screen, as networks experiment with adding shot probability graphics, player-tracking overlays, and NCAA stats to enhance their college basketball coverage. CBS and ESPN have taken the lead, introducing new production techniques for their premium basketball broadcasts.

NBA Analytics Influence College Basketball Coverage

The rise of analytics and data-driven storytelling in NBA coverage has expanded to the college scene, with ESPN and CBS using increasingly sophisticated graphics to showcase advanced stats. CBS Sports took the initiative, becoming the first broadcast network this season to air its "Beyond the Box Score" show, whose February 3 telecast featured Wichita State at Memphis. CBS described the production as an analytics-focused presentation designed to make school-used stats accessible to casual viewers. The network planned to use Second Spectrum's player-tracking technology for live player identification and ShotQuality to display shot probabilities.

CBS Sports noted the 2024 "Beyond the Box Score" edition would feature more integrated analytics segments than earlier versions, creating a smoother viewing experience. "We've evolved the show to not just highlight analytics and data, but to immerse the viewer in it," said JB Long, Senior Coordinator of Production Technology. "The goal is to let data inform and enhance the game flow naturally." The result is layers of live data appearing throughout the game, including live box scores, possession-based stats, and player-specific shot charts.

ESPN Emphasizes Real-Time Data for Live Stories

While CBS has focused on college basketball, ESPN receives NCAA data through its partnership with Genius Sports, covering 65,000 games annually. This collaboration enables new data-driven storytelling across ESPN's sports coverage.

"Genius Sports is the official data distributor for the NCAA, and their comprehensive data assets will complement our existing products, creating new opportunities to deliver game insights with rich analytics," said Kevin West, Senior Vice President of Product Strategy at ESPN.

Spencer Aarons, Sports Video Group's Senior Editor, observed that while data-driven analytics had appeared in college basketball broadcasts before, their use had been limited primarily to regional or secondary games. With broader adoption, Aarons predicted analytics overlays and play-tracking tools would soon become as standard as the score graphic.

CBS's 2024 "Beyond the Box Score" represents a significant shift, bringing production techniques previously reserved for regional broadcasts to national audiences. As these innovations transition from experimental applications to mainstream broadcasts, analysts will closely monitor how viewers respond to the enhanced data integration.
